Letter Of Intention

Hi, my name is Ferdinand Brødløs and I’m 20 years old. I currently live here in Viborg and have been for the past 3 years. This year is my first time applying for the bachelor, Computer Graphic Arts (CGA) at The Animation Workshop.

I chose to apply to CGA for many reasons. One of those reasons is because I’ve always had an interest in the visual world and how it affects us as people. I believe that it will have an even bigger influence among people who lives in the 21. century. My wish is to be among those people, who creates these amazing worlds. Worlds those people are moved by.

And it is with this education that this skill will be honed. The skill to be able to make ideas a reality. The skill to create worlds that take people's breath away. Besides, all of that I can also see the possibility to make a good, solid communication with people from all over the world. And from there, create a unique project that otherwise would be difficult to obtain.

The primary reason for why I chose to apply for CGA is because I want to improve. I want to take the next step and move towards the a more professional level. With those skills at my disposal, I will create fictional universes, character designs and a big focus on environments.
I know that the opportunities for work in this field are not prioritized as high as I had hoped. It’s really a shame because there are so many talented people here in Denmark. But that is not going to stop me from changing it. I dream that in the future to start a firm in Denmark where I can on a project with other people. It would be an amazing opportunity to be able to create a firm just like the previous TAW students who created SunCreature Studio.

During my time studying at Visual HF, I’ve done a little bit of freelance work here and there, with very satisfied customers. I learned that I care a lot about that the service is top notch. And I make sure that the customer knows that. I’ve also had assignments where I was in charged, but I work best when I have a sparring partner. And I can step up if it’s needed though I prefer not to be the boss.

One of the people I look up to the most is John Nevarez. A former artist at Pixar. I met him a few years ago when he was hosting a TAW Talk. We a really good talk during and after the TAW Talk. He even gave me some advice that I still carry with me to this day. My other inspirations sources are Aaron Blaise, Don Bluth, Doug TenNapel, Bard Bird and Sylvian Chomet just to name a few. They all have their own unique way to teach, and I enjoy every second when I read or watch a video with them.

Now that I already mentioned Doug TenNapel, he worked on the game The Neverhood from 1995, which has been one of my favorite games since I was a kid. The game was made with modeling clay and had an extremely well-written story. The music was some of the finest ever created and its humor works really well in the game. What Don Bluth did with The Land Before Time from 1996 has become an all-time classic for me. The animation and storytelling worked so well, that it moves something within. My last favorite animation movie is The Iron Giant from 1999. Again the storytelling was superb, but what really took my breath away, was the animation on the character’s faces. I had never seen that level of emotion on 2D animated characters before.

Those were 3 of my favorite movies, but where there is light there is also darkness. So my 3 least favorite movies are The Last Airbender, The Room and the Attack on Titan movie. They all together just completely destroys the term ‘a good movie’ they should actually not in the same category as movies because they are that terrible. The acting sucked the storytelling all over the place. Terrible movies, don’t ever watch them.

As I mentioned earlier I’m currently in my last year at Visual HF and it has been an amazing experience. With the help of all the teachers and my classmates, I evolved tremendously as an artist. And I have Iben Lindebjerg and Andreas Monty to thank for that. They both had a really good effect on my learning process. They had their own way of teaching and it really helped me move forward.
During my learning process I have traveled to different places. I love traveling and I want to go too, even more, new places in the future. For now, I have been to Praq, Sweden and Germany. I love going to new places and meeting new people and see how the culture differs from each country. If I had the opportunity to work overseas, then I would love to take it.

I would like to end this letter with a list of programs I’ve worked with. Other than that, thank you for reading my letter of intention and I would like to wish you a very pleasant day.

With kind regards
Ferdinand Brødløs
